Phobias you might never have heard of.

Fear they say is uncontrollable. Every human being is afraid of something one way or the other. The root cause is mainly traced to one's childhood. Is fear really? uncontrollable You'll find out as you keep reading.

Phobia is an irrational or obsessive fear or anxiety, usually of or about something particular. Phobia could range from fear of water, dolls, insects, clowns and even adults.
Usually, the source of these fears poses little or no danger.
The difference between normal fear and phobia is the degree of anxiety involved.

In this post, I'll be showing you some phobias you might never have heard of.

1. Nomophobia
'No MObile PHOne phoBIA'
(Fear of being without your mobile phone)

This is a psychological condition where half of the population suffers from this.

According to a survey sponsored by SecurEnvoy, statistics showed that young adults and adolescents are more likely to suffer from Nomophobia. The same survey showed that 77% of the teenagers reported anxiety and worries when they were without their mobile phones.

Ever misplaced a Mobile phone? Yes? How was your reaction? Chances are you might be suffering from this disorder if you usually get anxious when your phone loses reception, your battery goes dead or when you can't find your phone. You are probably suffering from Nomophobia, when you have more than one mobile phone with access to Internet, you are carrying charger everywhere, (no dulling), experiencing feelings of anxiety when thinking about losing your phone.

You could be suffering from Nomophobia,  when you keep device in reach when sleeping and never turned off, looking at phone screen constantly to avoid missed calls, messages or notifications. You might experience the urge to sleep with the mobile phone.

Note that, you might also experience physical injuries from constantly using your phones. Eg, sore elbows, hands, neck, back ache, headache. 'Debt' is usually a friend, based on excess data usage.

Students with nomophobia experience poor grade points. This is because it occupies the place of studying, doing assignment and even classes. Most young adults are nomophobic because they seek validation and self esteem. Social media seem to promote  phone addiction in young adults as they can easily access the Internet with their phones and stay in touch with people all over the world. But as we all know this is a wrong defense mechanism.

2. Decidophobia
Also fear of making mistakes.
(Fear of making decisions)

You do not trust your opinions. You excessively rely on others to help make decisions. You will do anything possible to avoid making choices because you fear making mistakes. Making mild decisions inspires intense anxiety.

A person with Decidophobia will rather allow a friend or family member make personal decisions for them and this interfers with their lives.

Believe in yourself. Listen to your instincts, don't be scared to admit when your choices are wrong. As humans, it doesn't matter how many times we fall but how many times we get back up.

3. Eisoptrophobia
(Fear of mirror)
This is an intense fear of not being able to look at oneself in the mirror or any reflective surface. This is sometimes as a result of traumatic event. Some people believe that mirrors traps one's soul.

In some cases, they aren't afraid of the mirror itself but the reflection. Superstitious stories about  how that mirrors reflect a person's soul and are portals to another world makes one scared. It is believed by some that ghosts live inside the mirror.
Most times, low self esteem plays a role in this. When  you are ashamed of your  physical appearance, uncomfortable with your own body, you might avoid reflective objects and this causes depression.

4. Ergophobia.
(Fear of work)

Now you might say this is relatable but there's a difference between disliking or hating your place of work to being scared of it.
Ergophobia is an extreme anxiety related with the place of work or work environment. If you have this phobia you will be scared of finding a job.

This could also be as a result of negative work experience in the past, having an abusive boss, or bad incident at the place of work. Ergophobia is sometimes related to social phobia. They work hand in hand. You might find it hard to get a job or keep it because you fear critism and anything relating to public.

5.  Heliphobia
        (fear of sunlight)

The fear of bright light is associated with perceived dangers of the sun. Wait a minute, so vampires do exist???? 😂
As much as this is impossible, If you are suffering from heliphobia, you usually find a way to avoid the sun. You ALWAYS try as much as possible to stay out of it.

6. Plutophobia

(Fear of money)

Can someone be scared of money?😟
If you usually experience the fear of having money or  wealthy people, chances are you are suffering from plutophobia. This could lead to destruction of one's career. This could be as a result of seeing weath destroy someone else's life, or fear of responsibilities and being kidnapped or robbed.

7.  Hippopomonstrosesquippedaliophobia
(Fear of long words)
This has to do with being embarrssed by pronouncing long words incorrectly. This could be as a result of being mocked in school as a kid.

8. Anthrophobia.
(Fear of people)

Are you afraid of people judging you? Are you so concerned about being humiliated or rejected. Does the thought of it make you shiver or scared? Yea, you got it right.

9. Somniphobia.
(Fear of falling asleep)
This is majorly based on a traumatic experience. Kids who have nightmares will find it hard to fall asleep as they believe it's real. In adults, it could be a case of sleeping disorder or insomnia.

10.  Phonophobia.
(Fear of fear itself)

This is the fear of having a phobia.

Let's look at the question I asked at the beginning of this post.
Are fears truly uncontrollable?
First you must know that fears aren't real. They are a figment of the imagination. Everybody experiences fear, no doubt about that but while some people know how to deal with fears, others do not know how to, hence they are tormented by the lies built up in their minds.

NOTE: Fears are controllable. I'll quickly share some ways to deal with Phobias.

One of the best ways to overcome a phobia is by 'exposure therapy'. Gradually and repeatedly expose yourself to your fears in a safe way. By doing this you tend to eliminate anxiety until you overcome your fears. Stop running from your fears.  Learn to face them, face them afraid if you have to. Just face them.

Next, try talking with a mental health professional. Phobias tend to last shortly in children whereas adults takes a longer time and might have to undergo treatment. Medications assist in reducing anxiety but only for a short term. This could be used in cases like giving a speech on stage or going on a boat ride.

Try some relaxation techniques and exercises.

Finally, never forget to applaud yourself for every little effort and step you take, appreciate your courage and always believe in yourself.

I hope you've learnt something new today.
Do well to

Five things people notice about you!

"First impression is the last impression" they say. Hmmmn, while I do not agree with this one hundred percent, to some extent it is.  You meet and interact with different people everyday. Sometimes, you easily connect with someone you are meeting for the first time  and it feels like you've known each other for ages. However, that is not always the case.   Have you ever caught someone staring at you for more than normal? Does it tickle your fancy?  People stare at YOU for so many reasons. I have carefully penned down, FIVE picked out reasons people are staring at you. Stay with me as we check them out. The number one on my list is 'the shape of your head' 😄 I'm so sorry, that wasn't funny was it? Who stares at someone else's head anyways? Maybe I'm right, maybe I'm not but I'm not here to talk about the shape of our heads. Might as well discuss this later. Keep your fingers crossed.😁 Do people stare at you admirab...

Is Birthday depression a thing?

With my birthday approaching, I just can’t help but talk about this. Yes, Birthday depression is a thing.   The feeling is not pleasant I must say,  It entails  feeling lonelier on a day you are meant to feel loved, cherished and appreciated ,   e specially when it appears  as t he only day you get noticed , feeling like a burden to your friends and family, feeling sad, underachieved, less enthusiastic as the days roll by, feeling anxious beforehand and on the day itself. Yes, that is birthday depression. It is certainly not a good feeling, honestly. Over the last decade, I think I have only really felt that birthday vibe twice and that was 2020 and 2021. It was like the first time I felt loved by a lot of persons and it felt so genuine, the thoughtful gifts I got, the heartfelt messages, calls and everything.  I honestly didn’t want the day to come to an end.    So why do birthdays come with so much anxiety/depression?   • Too much attention...

15 types of people you should never get into a relationship with.

Hello! Hello! Hello!!! Guess who's back with the relationship talk? Yep, moi. I've been itching to write about this topic(Types of people you should never get into a relationship with) for a while now. What I'll be listing down shortly are what we call "Red flags." What exactly are red flags? Red flags can be seen as a cue, warning, alert; a sign or signal that something is wrong. In reality, red flags are something to not be taken lightly because if you ignore them you'll regret later.  Most times people kid themselves by saying stuffs like 'if you love someone these won't matter because they're just flaws and would probably fade after a while', these are lies, illusions they tell themselves maybe because they're scared of admiting the relationship is toxic. In a world where we can't read the minds of others, it's often times hard to predict or know what someone else thinks/feels about us. As humans we are curious to know certain t...

A must read before you check into 2021.

It's the most wonderful time of the year, no doubt. Merry Christmas in arrears Lovelies. I assure you I didn't run away, school and exams happened.😁 I had no plans of making a blog post until next year but I knew that was me procrastinating again, so here I am guys. During the week, I observed how negative people behave and I realized it robbed off on me in some ways. I found myself saying "This has got to be the ' dryest ' holiday." I asked myself why I loved this festive season so much as a kid. Was it because of the songs, the gifts, the mood of the festive period or just getting to see loved ones and spending time together? Hmm. There's no doubt how challenging this year was for everyone. The corona virus which was accompanied with a lockdown affected relationships, businesses and institutions. However, we came out stronger, better and that is enough to be grateful. The festive season is all about gratitude and expressing love.  I'll quickly take ...

Misconceptions concerning relationships.

Hello Guys🖐🥳🥳🥳  Who missed me? Okay, so one of my new year resolution was to get consistent with my blog and other literary works and believe you me, I was but my mobile phone decided to go bananas on me and hence, the break. It’s been a wonderful year so far, I’ve experienced so much this past few weeks and I’m grateful for the journey so far. I hope you do too😚 I took an interest on this topic because of so many stories I’ve heard and seen.  What exactly is a  misconception ? Well, misconception  is a view or opinion that is incorrect based on faulty thinking/understanding. We say experience is the best teacher but is it truly the best like we say? Wouldn’t it be better if we learnt something before attempting it? That way you’d have avoided the mistakes that came from being ignorant.  Now, straight on today’s topic, below are ten misconceptions concerning relationships that I would like to address and indulge you with. Please keep reading👓 1. I t’s bett...

There is "You" in Unique.

"Tell me something you'd love to change about yourself" Avery asked me.      "Everything" I said.       "That's just so wrong. You can't think like that." She said with concern etched on her face.  Avery was just a year older than me but she spoke smartly and I couldn't help but envy her most of the time, sometimes I wished I was her. I  wished I had her hair, her clothings even down to her family.       "See Didi, if you don't love anything about yourself that's downright wickedness to yourself and our creator. Do you mean to say he made a mistake when_"      "Don't get me wrong Avery" I interrupted.      "I... I do like somethings about myself but_" I scoffed.       "But what?"      "They're kind of irrelevant"       "Tell me one thing atleast, Go on! Tell me the irrelevant things"      "w...

Signs you’re giving someone else power over your life

Hi and welcome to my blog.   As we all know, Nigeria is 61years old today. I’ll spare you the history as majority of us already know how we(Nigerians) Gained independence(Freedom) from the British empire on Oct 1st. I wanted my topic to sync with the independence theme so hence “Signs you’re giving someone else power over your life” Independence simply means the freedom from outside control or influence of others.  Do you allow people make you do things you ordinarily do not want to do, do you get pressured into making decisions, do you allow other people influence the way you feel, act or the things you say negatively? You may be giving them power over you. Let me quickly take you through some of these signs.   1. You find it difficult to set boundaries.  Perhaps you used to have certain rules and boundaries but somehow you no longer do, you just let anyone waltz in and out of your life, you give people the leverage over you on a platter of gold. You’re giving other...

A letter to a younger version of myself

Hi and welcome to my blog. I’m super excited to write about this topic because it’s something I’ve always thought about and I’m sure you have too. We all remember our childhood memories, some great, some not so great and one way or the other we have tried to imagine what it would feel like to meet the younger version of ourselves, many of us wish we could turn back the hands of time to correct some silly things we did or just to make a different choice. I for one want to go back and yell “Don’t engage in those rough plays(to avoid the wounds on my knees, lol) but this is life, once a moment is gone, it is gone, all you’re left with are memories. A brief letter to a younger version of myself. I took out time to ask some of my friends about the topic above and here are some of their interesting messages. I observed, one of the major things we all want to tell a younger version of ourselves is to either quit doing something or start doing a thing. Majority of us would like to advice the m...

Here's what you should know about break ups.

Hello guys. Welcome to today's blog post. Today's topic is really a sensitive one and I'm certain you'll find a thing or two helpful. Please click on the subscribe button to notify you when I upload a new blog post, thank you so much. I think I've been running away from topics related to dating/relationships and break ups because I felt I wasn't worthy of talking about it since I have little experience there. Today's topic is a common one we've all heard of and might have experienced. In every relationship I believe there should be a common goal and reason for it. We all want a happy ending but what happens when things don't go as planned?  A lot of persons blame themselves after a breakup they didn't initiate. I once asked a friend of mine what it felt like having your heart broken? She said it wasn't any different from poking your chest with a hard object till it hurts. Wow. Heartbreaks are indeed painful🤕 The pain ass...

A bucket list of bad habits to quit.

It's been what, two weeks? Oh wow, I've missed you guys so much. A lot of things snatched my attention for a while but I'm here now, all yours😆 Well, I tried fitting everything in here as a single blog post but it got too lenghty and I know how lenghty posts can be a turn off so I decided to split it into parts. Now, some of these things might not seem like a bad habit to you but trust me they are. Bad habits are basically things we do that keeps us from being our best, not so? I'm not going to go on about habits like binge drinking alcohol, smoking and the rest, my major aim is to talk about those simple things we probably might not have noticed before or don't pay much attention to. Here's my bucket list of bad habits to quit. 1. Boasting and bragging about not reading. It might seem cool when you hear statements like "Me and book are not one o" or "I'm not a fan of reading" most times when we say stuffs like this in publ...
