Phobia is an irrational or obsessive fear or anxiety, usually of or about something particular. Phobia could range from fear of water, dolls, insects, clowns and even adults.
Usually, the source of these fears poses little or no danger.
The difference between normal fear and phobia is the degree of anxiety involved.
In this post, I'll be showing you some phobias you might never have heard of.
1. Nomophobia
'No MObile PHOne phoBIA' (Fear of being without your mobile phone) |
This is a psychological condition where half of the population suffers from this.
According to a survey sponsored by SecurEnvoy, statistics showed that young adults and adolescents are more likely to suffer from Nomophobia. The same survey showed that 77% of the teenagers reported anxiety and worries when they were without their mobile phones.
Ever misplaced a Mobile phone? Yes? How was your reaction? Chances are you might be suffering from this disorder if you usually get anxious when your phone loses reception, your battery goes dead or when you can't find your phone. You are probably suffering from Nomophobia, when you have more than one mobile phone with access to Internet, you are carrying charger everywhere, (no dulling), experiencing feelings of anxiety when thinking about losing your phone.
You could be suffering from Nomophobia, when you keep device in reach when sleeping and never turned off, looking at phone screen constantly to avoid missed calls, messages or notifications. You might experience the urge to sleep with the mobile phone.
Note that, you might also experience physical injuries from constantly using your phones. Eg, sore elbows, hands, neck, back ache, headache. 'Debt' is usually a friend, based on excess data usage.
Students with nomophobia experience poor grade points. This is because it occupies the place of studying, doing assignment and even classes. Most young adults are nomophobic because they seek validation and self esteem. Social media seem to promote phone addiction in young adults as they can easily access the Internet with their phones and stay in touch with people all over the world. But as we all know this is a wrong defense mechanism.
2. Decidophobia
Also fear of making mistakes. (Fear of making decisions) |
You do not trust your opinions. You excessively rely on others to help make decisions. You will do anything possible to avoid making choices because you fear making mistakes. Making mild decisions inspires intense anxiety.
A person with Decidophobia will rather allow a friend or family member make personal decisions for them and this interfers with their lives.
Believe in yourself. Listen to your instincts, don't be scared to admit when your choices are wrong. As humans, it doesn't matter how many times we fall but how many times we get back up.
3. Eisoptrophobia
(Fear of mirror) |
In some cases, they aren't afraid of the mirror itself but the reflection. Superstitious stories about how that mirrors reflect a person's soul and are portals to another world makes one scared. It is believed by some that ghosts live inside the mirror.
Most times, low self esteem plays a role in this. When you are ashamed of your physical appearance, uncomfortable with your own body, you might avoid reflective objects and this causes depression.
4. Ergophobia.
(Fear of work) |
Now you might say this is relatable but there's a difference between disliking or hating your place of work to being scared of it.
Ergophobia is an extreme anxiety related with the place of work or work environment. If you have this phobia you will be scared of finding a job.
This could also be as a result of negative work experience in the past, having an abusive boss, or bad incident at the place of work. Ergophobia is sometimes related to social phobia. They work hand in hand. You might find it hard to get a job or keep it because you fear critism and anything relating to public.
5. Heliphobia
(fear of sunlight) |
The fear of bright light is associated with perceived dangers of the sun. Wait a minute, so vampires do exist???? 😂
As much as this is impossible, If you are suffering from heliphobia, you usually find a way to avoid the sun. You ALWAYS try as much as possible to stay out of it.
6. Plutophobia
(Fear of money) |
Can someone be scared of money?😟
If you usually experience the fear of having money or wealthy people, chances are you are suffering from plutophobia. This could lead to destruction of one's career. This could be as a result of seeing weath destroy someone else's life, or fear of responsibilities and being kidnapped or robbed.
7. Hippopomonstrosesquippedaliophobia
(Fear of long words) |
8. Anthrophobia.
(Fear of people) |
9. Somniphobia.
(Fear of falling asleep) |
10. Phonophobia.
(Fear of fear itself) |
Are fears truly uncontrollable?
First you must know that fears aren't real. They are a figment of the imagination. Everybody experiences fear, no doubt about that but while some people know how to deal with fears, others do not know how to, hence they are tormented by the lies built up in their minds.
NOTE: Fears are controllable. I'll quickly share some ways to deal with Phobias.
One of the best ways to overcome a phobia is by 'exposure therapy'. Gradually and repeatedly expose yourself to your fears in a safe way. By doing this you tend to eliminate anxiety until you overcome your fears. Stop running from your fears. Learn to face them, face them afraid if you have to. Just face them.
Next, try talking with a mental health professional. Phobias tend to last shortly in children whereas adults takes a longer time and might have to undergo treatment. Medications assist in reducing anxiety but only for a short term. This could be used in cases like giving a speech on stage or going on a boat ride.
Try some relaxation techniques and exercises.
Finally, never forget to applaud yourself for every little effort and step you take, appreciate your courage and always believe in yourself.
I hope you've learnt something new today.
Do well to
